Popular video game developer company CD Projekt Red has announced that they have fallen victim to a very serious ransomware attack.
CD Projekt Red are a very well respected Polish game development company who have recently released one of the most anticipated games of the last decade; Cyberpunk 2077. The company have also developed the famous Witcher game series.
Last week, however, the company announced that hackers had infiltrated their internal network and held their data at ransom after rendering it unusable.
The attackers claimed to have stolen source code from the company’s most popular games mentioned above, and more. As per a typical ransomware attack they where informed they must pay for their files to be released or they would be leaked onto the internet.
CD Projekt Red have announced that they will not negotiate and have made a statement on Twitter which shows the ransom note the attackers left describing how they stole source code files of the games.
“We have also dumped all of your documents relating to accounting, administration, legal, HR, investor relations and more!” the note added.
“If we will not come to an agreement, then your source codes will be sold or leaked online and your documents will be sent to our contacts in gaming journalism,”
Afterwards the games company released a statement on Twitter saying that they had begun to secure the situation and “IT infrastructure and begun restoring the data”. “We will not give in to the demands or negotiate with the actor,”. They also added that luckily no personal data had been leaked despite the claims of HR documents being compromised.
CD Projeckt Red have now informed law enforcement and data protection authorities who will investigate further and take legal action against the hackers.
